Coastal & Inland

Coastal Rowing

Coastal rowing in the St Ayles is foremost about community, recreation and adventure in some of the UK's most beautiful waterside landscapes. Consequently, though competitive teams are encouraged, Zaznak's first goal is to get rowers on the water and out to the coast to enjoy the experience of coastal rowing.

At every opportunity, teams tow boats to coastal locations such as Dartmouth and Bigbury Bay in South Devon and the Mawddach Estuary and Fairbourne beach in Snowdonia.

Non-rowing association is encouraged to extend Zaznak's community objectives: Coast walking, cycling, fishing, conservation and beach activities all encourage supportive community alongside the rowing.

Rowing Inland

In the summer Zaznak practice regularly on the River Severn north of Worcester on the beautiful and unspoilt section between Bevere and Holt locks under the watchful tower of Holt Castle. Boats are tested and basic skills learned on Top Barn Farm's adventure lakes.

Rowing Membership

Zaznak ICR (Inland and Coastal Rowing) is an open club for all ages (members under 18 must have parental permission). Everyone is a novice in a St Ayles and so experience of rowing is not necessary. Training will be given to each team and especially to Coxswains who will lead each team (four rowers and a cox). Teams and individuals must pass a basic competency before their first coastal row.

Regattas and Competition

Whilst Zaznak place great emphasis on community and recreation, an important element of Zaznak's rowing is competition. We aim to enter the St Ayles World Championships in 2016 in Scotland in as many categories as we have willing teams. The Great River Race through London on the Thames is also a great draw for fixed seat rowers of all shapes and sizes.
